Blog Post #2

Choose a character from your book.  How do you envision this character?  Use your words to describe how this character looks, acts, and behaves.  Also, discuss the impact this character has had on the story up to this point. Would you be friends with this character, or would you avoid him/her?  Why? What role does this character play in your book?  If this character was not in the book, would the book change?  Why or why not??  (Remember to give specific details and a complete blog entry, and don't forget to comment on two other blog entries!  Happy Blogging!)

  1. I am choosing to write about one of the main characters, Eric. I envision him as a bigger guy that does not have very many friends. He is a kind, caring, and loyal best friend. Eric is friends with a girl named Sarah Byrnes. When she was three, she claims that she pulled off a pot of spaghetti and burned herself. Sadly, her dad would not let them do anything to help her look less scarred from the accident. So ever since then, everyone had made fun of her and her last name, Byrnes. Eric was always there to be friends with her. He stayed fat for Sarah Byrnes for a whole year. In the chapters I have read so far, Eic seems like a great friend and I know I would want him as a friend. If Eric was not in the book, it would change entirely. The whole book so far is written in his point of view.

    1. He sounds like a pretty great person, people are really quick to judge others so it's cool when instead they stick by there sides and support those who are looked at funny or differently. We need more Eric's in the world.

    2. He sounds like a good friend to Sarah and a good person to be there for Sarah when she needs someone.

    3. I agree with you that if Eric wasn't in the book, it would change entirely because it his from his point of view. He does seem like a loyal friend because he stayed fat to prove to Sarah that he isn't the one changing.

    4. I imagine him as a skinny toned guy but only because the person on the cover of the book looks like that. I think Eric is too good for his own good. And I think he is trying to change.

  2. I am going to choose Louie because he is my favorite character in the book so far. The one word I would use to describe Louie would be determination. I chose this word because he is determined to show up day one ready to show the coaches he has improved and ready to take on a bigger role on this years team. Louie has had a big impact on this story so far and is the main character. He challenges other characters on the football field and has a really smoking hot girlfriend he says and he said he does not know why she likes him because he is just average he says. I would definitely be his friend be last summer me and Alec Wulfkule did the same thing that Carter and Louie did we worked out all the time. His role in the story is the main character and the story is all about him. The book would be way different because he would being challenging boomer in practice or have become really good friends with carter. The book would not be anything without Louie.

    1. Louie sounds like the absolute opposite of Dillon in my book. Dillon lives in a small town and is one of the most athletic guys in town but he refuses to be on any team because he doesn't prefer the coaches or there way of coaching. Instead he does triathlons... not threw the school to kinda rub it all in there faces... he's a peace of work to say the least.

    2. I agree with what Crystal was saying. Dillon and Louie would probably hate each other because one works so hard for their school to b successful and the other is successful but doesn't want to help the school. I find it interesting that the same author can create both of these characters.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Taylor and Crystal because the sound like complete and total opposites. Louie works extremely hard to be perfect and excellent and Dillon could not give a crap about his school or the people in it.

    4. i agree with you on saying hes determined and i liked how you related you and alec to them working out. i said the the same thing saying the book would not be near the same without him in it.

    5. Louie is also my favorite character in the book because of the way he stands up to his coach and does the right thing by not playing dirty football. I would also be friends with Louie because he is determined to the right thing all the time and I respect a person like that. I would agree with you that the book would change without Louie because he is the main character and I think without Louie the book wouldn't teach the readers any life lessons like a book should.

  3. I'm sure the book has described these characters in some way some where along the lines, but I've kinda shaped them in my own image while reading... You could tell me that someone has blond hair and hazel eyes but when I read I'll probably still imagine them as someone with dark red hair and deep green eyes. So, with that in mind my book is Chinese Handcuffs, and one of my favorite characters right now is probably Jen. Jen is a really intense basketball player who has a soft side when with friends and family. She does super well in school and even better on the court. In fact while going head to head with another top school during a game her main competition was there star player, she won the game but while doing so landed a nice comfy spot in a hospital bed with a concussion and a lump about the size of an avocado. As far as her appearance goes I tend to imagine her as lean maybe with long light brown hair that stays up and kinda golden brown eyes... idk just how I imagine her. She is one of Dillon's two crushes, and shes super outgoing. I think I would personally avoid her because of the mere fact that she sounds like an intimidating boss. And, if she weren't in the book it would be a hole lot different. The boy would be completely in love with his dead brother's old girlfriend who had his brother's kid which in my opinion is just really well messed up.

    1. That sounds like a very interesting book so far. It reminds me of when I was in middle school I was on the basketball team with one of my friends. She was always the same number and same position as a girl from our main competition, Beckman. They did not like each other very much and they were very competitive people.

    2. I also imagine Jen having long brown hair, and i agree that without her in the story it would change many outcomes.

  4. I'm gonna choose TB from Chinese Handcuffs. He is not a main character in the book but he has a very large impact on Jennifer's history, thus changing the story. When we first meet him, he seems as a nice man as acts like a proper step father to Jennifer. He is nice, he takes care of Jennifer, Dawn, and their mother, he buys them stuff, but then he reveals his real self. It turns out that he is just as bad as their real father was. He has violent rage episodes that threaten the family, the family very much believes that he will kill them one day, he is a pedophile, just like their actual dad, and rapes Jennifer often. I would absolutely hate to know this guy. Now Jennifer is a tough girl, she blocks all this out and only allows it to happen because she is scared for her family. It leaves Jennifer mentally scarred and scared of guys. It stops her from having successful dates and it crushes Dillon because he was rejected by Jennifer and he does not know why. If he was not in the book she would not have to deal with that part of her terrible past, and she might have been over her fear on men caused by her father.

    1. TB sounds a little like a character in my book because he was a nice person at first but then changed. Dale is a big bully to the two main characters in my book, Sarah Byrnes and Eric. They did talk about how Dale was friends with them at one point.

    2. I agree with you that TB is not a good character. The things that he does is just not right, and for this i also would avoid him as much as i can.

    3. TB was kind to Jennifer at the beginning and then sadly got her trust and did horrible things. When I got to that part i was truly shocked he changed so suddenly

  5. In the book running loose, there is a character names boomer, I like to think of boomer as a strong buff person, that doesnt think too much. He is all muscle. He is hard headed as well. Right now in the book Their coach told the team that they need to take out this star player from a different team, so they can win. Louie (the main character) does not agree with that. He thinks that they should beat them fair and square. Boomer does not like that. He took a swing at louie and knocked some teeth out. I do not think that boomer would be a person I would be friends with, or I would find it hard for me to stay friendly with him, when he does not think. Boomer's role so far is pretty big he is the star player on the football team. If he was not in the book their team would not be as good without him.

    1. Boomer sounds like a very interesting guy, maybe letting his ego impact how he acts and how he thinks makes his it easier to let his anger take things too far.

    2. this is why i hate boomer he just rubs off wrong and i was mad when he hit louie. i wouldn't be friends with a guy like this either hes just to mean.

    3. I agree about what you say about boomer and I would probably not be one of his friends either. Even though boomer is the star on the team I would have to disagree and say the team would be better off without his bad attitude, lazy practices, and bad team chemistry. I think the book would be better off without boomer in it.

      Delete
    4. I agree it would be hard to be friends with Boomer because he is so cocky and hard headed. I am not a fan when guys act like they are the better than everyone else because it is very annoying.

    5. I agree that boomer is hard to be with because he is so cocky and stubborn, and that the football would be horrible without him.

  6. I am going to choose Eric from Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes. I would imagine Eric to be a bigger kid that is considered an outcast at school except during swim. I don't know why but, I can imagine as a person who is sarcastic about some of the stuff he says. From my point of view I would consider Eric to be a nice kid because of how he risks his body image for Sarah Byrnes, someone who gets made fun of by the students because she has burns that cover her face. Eric is the main character and has a really big impact on the book. Eric is the one who is telling the story from his point of view and he is the only kid who will be friends with Sarah Brynes and visits her in the psychiatric unit even though it is really tough for him. If Eric wasn't in the book the book wouldn't be same because he is telling his story and what he went through.

    1. This book sounds really interesting. I would not have guessed what Eric was staying fat for Sarah because she got burnt. I'm curious as to if Eric is stay fat because he loves her or just because he feels bad for her. What is the history between the two?

    2. The fact that Sarah is burnt was really surprising when I first heard it, I thought that there would be some body issues but not burn marks, it seems like Eric is a stand up guy who enjoys making his friends happy

  7. Carter is the quarterback in my book Running Loose. I feel like he is big but not fat hes solid and tall he seems like he was raised in a small town hes polite and willing to help about anyone. Cater has a big role in the book he helps Louie with football and is the person he goes to answer his questions. If cater wasn't in the book it would have to change because who would help him clean the bar and practice football.

    1. I agree that Carter loves helping Louie during this rough time. I really think Carter is getting very close to Louie because at the being of the book Louie said that Carter was not really his best friend to Louie but now they are getting very close friends. With all the time they spend together like at the Buck horn (bar),football field and all the secrets Louie tells Carter, I also agree if Carter was not in the book it would be totally different.

    2. I also agree, Carter would make a great friend because he is the guy that helps you when you need it. When louie wanted to run drills. carter has been there passing him the ball, and pushing him to his limits.

    3. I agree with you Justin, Carter is a really good kid and is a good friend. He is very helpful in Louie's life. I also agree that if wasn't in the book then it wouldn't be the same because he is one of the main characters and gives Louie advance and is basically his best friend.

  8. The character I am going to talk about is Louie. I learned that is isn't a person that really feels the need to show off and such. He enjoys football and has a huge crush on Becky. In general he is a kid that over thinks some things, but he is a nice kid that tries to stay out of trouble and enjoys being with his friends. If Louie hadn't been in the book then there wouldn't be much of a story because he is the main character and it would have to be from another characters perspective. We also wouldn't get told his thoughts, which we wouldn't have these thoughts if he wasn't in the book. In general I would probably be friends with Louie because he is a nice and pretty good kid.

    1. Louie sounds like Dillon in my book. They both have some of the same connections. They both like girls and both don't like to show off but are good at sports. Also there wouldn't be much of a story with out these characters.

    2. I agree with you on being friends with Louie, but I disagree on the book changing all that much. If Louie was not in the book, Washington would still get injured and be back on his feet in a couple of weeks. Even though Louie did stand up to the Coach, nothing else happened beyond that, no one else felt bad about it and quit the team. If Louie wasn't in the book, the same thing would happen, no one would stand up to the Coach.

      Delete
    3. I agree with being friends with Louie because he is very compassionate and stands up to coach because what had happened with Washington which was so rude and totally uncalled for. If Louie was not in the book then maybe carter or boomer would stand up to coach.

  9. The character I choose is Louie I see him as a very hard working person. He acts like a very responsible caring person .he is also very active in school sports that includes football. Louie impacts the story so far because he stood up against boomer when he was being racist. I would be friends with this person because he stands up for what he believes in. Louie role in the book is as the main character .if Louie was not in the book it would change the story completely. It would be a different side of a story and point of view as if boomer was the main character.

  10. The character I chose is Carter because he is one of the nicest characters in the book and whenever Louie is nervous carter makes him feel better. He is good at sports, he does not act cocky, He is friendly with anyone, and He behaves all the time. He has impacted the story quite a bit because he is Louies best friend and with out him it would be bad because he helps Louie get through things when he is nervous. Personally i would be friends with Carter because he seems like a great person and he motivates everyone.

    2. I agree that Carter is a nice character. Since Carter isn't cocky that makes him a good character in the book and well respected on the football team an in town. I would also be friends with Carter for many reasons. From the motivation of him is the biggest reason why i would be friends with him. The next is for how nice of person he is.

    3. I like Carter to and he has always been nice to Louie throughout the book so far. Carter and Louie really have become good friends because of the countless hours they have put in on the field this summer. Carter is a confidence booster for Louie always saying, "You got this, we are ready". I only think Carter and Louie are just going to remain best friends throughout the story because they both dislike boomer and have already gained trust and respect for each other.

  11. In the book Chinese Handcuffs, Jen, also know as Jenifer and J. Maddy, seems to be a well rounded person. She is not only athletic but also very good in school. I picture her as a tall, muscular, sandy blonde, who wears sweatpants everyday. Jen is a love interest of the main character, Dillon. She has been very interesting so far since she has had a very rocky past and current life. If Jen was not in the book, I feel like the book would not be as interesting. We know a lot about Jen from the chapters she's involved in that Dillon has no clue of. I am very excited to see if or when Jen tells Dillon about her past. I feel like Jen and I would not be friends because we don't have much in common. She is very good at everything she does and that is not my kind of people.

    1. I agree with you that Jen makes the book interesting, for a couple of reasons. The first is we wouldn't have all these back stories about her dad, and now T.B. Also we would not have the love triangle with Dillon, Stacey, and Jen.

      Delete
    2. Unlike you, I do have a connection with Jennifer. Some people have rough past and need someone to listen to them. What people show on the outside isn't always how they feel on the inside. I would know. I've been judged for the things that I have been through by some people. They're no different than other people and just need a friend who won't judge them based on their past. I know how it feels.

    3. I also don't think I would be able to be friends with her. I am not a person who is very into sports nor good at everything I do. She seems as though she could be a good friend to other people, just maybe not right for some.

  12. The character that i am choosing to describe is Preston Hemmingway. Since he is in a gang i picture him to have lots of tattoos, and hes also paralyzed so he is in a wheelchair. He tries to be cool and fit in even though he is paralyzed with the help of drugs. I also feel like he is shy and not very out going, because of his physical state. If i was in the book i would avoid him due to the fact that he acts like hes better than everyone, and takes drugs. If he wasn't in the book i do not think it would change a whole lot, except for the fact that Dillon, his brother, would not be able to write letters to anyone.

    1. I would have to agree with you Nathan, do to the fact that Preston has a record with drugs I would keep clear of Preston. Also I think the story would change more than what you think. Their family would still be together and might be a normal family in a bigger town.

  13. I am choosing Jen from Chinese Handcuffs. She is a very damaged character who has been though a lot. When I picture Jen I think of a Meagan Mahass. Tall, athletic, blonde and very motivated. She seems like a very dedicated character throughout her basketball tournaments, and all the things she is going though in her home life makes her sort of a damaged goods kind of vibe. When I read things about Jen I see her as a very quiet girl, who could almost be socially awkward at times. Like for instance when she was thinking about actually dating boys she got a shutter though her body, which is completely understandable. The relationship between Jen and the main character Dillon is very personal, and very unique. It reminds me of a relationship between a good guy and girl friend. To me I would probably be freinds with Jen because she seems to be really easy to get along with, also she might need extra support and comfort from someone other than men; shes had a lot of problems with trusting men and I feel a girls influence in the friendship department and trust department would help her heal. The role Jen plays in the book is extremely important to Dillon, he thinks very highly of her, and confides in her. I feel that the book would be different if she was not in it to support Dillon. I also feel Dillon would not be the basketball teams trainer because he would have little to no interest in helping other girls out if Jen was not on the team. Also Dillon would not have someone to talk to, and the relationship he has with her is very important on his healing after Preston died. Like for instance they tell each other very personal things. For example Jen telling Dillon that her stepdad T.B has sex with her and the fact that he would kill her and her family if she told anyone. Or the fact that Dillon can tell Jen how he feels so much for her and that the relationship he has with her is similar to how he feels about Stacy. I feel that Jen will impact Dillon though the book, I feel that Dillon will get so angry about Jen's situation and do something about what she told him; ending up in some kind of disaster or making trouble for Jen and Dillon.

    1. I agree that Jennifer is extremely damaged by things she has been through. She reminds me a lot like myself. It's nice that Dillon and Jennifer are able to trust each other on a personal level. That's very important when you've had a rough life/past. I agree with you that Jennifer does need extra support and comfort. Keeping it to herself makes her feel very alone. I'm glad Dillon and Jennifer met each other. I like how they're both there for each other because they both have things to talk about.

    2. I was thinking the same thing with the connection between Jen and Megan because they are both the star basketball players but they are not cocky about it. I think that the reason she is not dating Dillon is because she does not like people to touch her because it reminds her of what people have done to her.

  14. I envision Sarah as a blonde girl with a heavily scarred face sitting in a plain white room with little furniture, and staring at the wall all the time. I see her as I've seen people in movies. I see her just sitting there, not doing anything, not talking to anyone, never moving. Sarah plays one of the main characters in the book, almost all of the book has to do with her. After all, it is named "Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes." Yes, the book would change due to the fact that the book is focused on her. She is the reason for everything Eric has done.

  15. I am choosing to write about Eric from my book. He is one of the main characters in the book I am reading. I envision him as a taller guy who has the body of a swimmer but a little on the fluffier side. I feel as though he doesn't have many friends because he chooses Sarah over anything. I also envision him as a caring, kind, thoughtful, and very loyal friend. I would want to be friends with him because he is a very loyal friend. He has a friend named Sarah Brynes and when she was three she poured spaghetti on her face and hands. Her dad wouldn't take her to the doctor so she wouldn't have so much scarring, but with all of her scarring she never really had friends. The only true friend she has is Eric because he doesn't judge her and looks past it. When they were in high school he joined the swim team he started to shed some of his fluffiness and in return for him to show he is loyal, he ate so much just to stay fat for a whole year. Eric is the main character of this book and if he wasn't in the book, the book wouldn't make any sense. The book is in his point of view and without him there wouldn't be a point of view to see from.

I envision him to be a tall and athletically built. he would be averagely good looking and he would wear work clothes, he would be the guy you could walk up to and talk to even after a hard days work. he is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in, and is a lover not a fighter. Louie is the main character in the book, he is the main reason for everything happening in the book. without him the story would be insignificant. with all the decisions he has made he is someone i would defiantly be friends with him. because I value his morals and respect him as a person. without him the town would not be exactly the same, he has an impact on his town.

  17. Dillon Hemmingway is the main character in Chinese Handcuffs. I picture him to be a little over 6 foot tall with a lengthy body. He has a weird attitude. He like a bad boy to the vice principal, but wen it comes to girls he is sweet and caring. He has a bit of a girl problem in the book right now, there are two girls he likes and wants to keep them both as friends, but doesn't know which one he likes more. I think he acts this way to the vp because of what his brother put him through, but for the girls I think it is because he wants to keep them both around. This book would change drastically without Dillon, being the main character and everything. It probably wouldn't be much of a book with out him. To be totally honest he seems like the type of person I would hang out with.

I also agree that Carter is one of the main reasons Louie has stayed in football for so long, because when Coach Lednecky told the team to take out Washington, Carter convinced Louie to stay on the team.

    2. I agree, I think that Carter is a caring person and I think him and Louie have such a good friendship being their for each other. Carter is a very convincing kid and has a good impact in Louie's and probably other characters through out the book.

    3. Cater sounds like a great guy! He definitely has an impact on others if his support can help keep someone in a sport. Also I agree with Toni that he most likely has a huge impact on others though out the book.

  19. In my book Staying fat for Sarah Byrnes. How i imagine Sarah was first was blond, clumsy because of the spaghetti accident but still shy because of the scares.. Because of the time hop. now my perspective on Sarah is that shes going to be blond, careful of everything, shes going to have not as many friends because people are going to be judgmental. Although she needs a few close friends and now we are finding out how close she was with dale because she told him that it wasn't a pot a spaghetti that it was her dad trying to teach a lesson. Sarah is the main character and i think that if she went to my school I think that we could be friends especially if i was the one she opened up to because then i would get her help.

    3. I am reading the same book and I agree on what Sarah would look like. I feel as though she didn't open up to people because they would feel as though she was wanting attention and for the longest time she told everyone it was spaghetti. I feel that she opened up to Dale because he hasn't denied that his dad had hit him before.

  20. I'm reading the book "Running Loose" and I'm writing about one of the main character's Louie. I imagine him as an average guy; average grades and average personality. But, he truly cares about his friends and family, and his girlfriend Becky. Louie works hard at the things he enjoys whether it's Football or Cross-Country Skiing. He's also very impulsive, most of the time he doesn't think through things before he acts, someone usually talks him out of doing something crazy. I personally would love to hang out with this guy, he's loyal, hard-working, and willing to stand up for the things he doesn't agree with; all traits that i wouldn't mind in a friend. Even though the book is told from his point of view, even Louie says that what he did didn't matter. Without going into too many spoilers, Becky would have another boyfriend, Carter would have a different friend, and Washington being hurt, the whole reason Louie quit the team, was back on his feet after a couple of weeks. So, at this point in time, if my character was not in the book not much would change overall.

  23. I chose the character Dilion. I envision Dillion to be a tall athletic guy with sandy brown hair (don't actually know if he has sandy brown hair, just think he would have this hair color) big and muscular. Any girls dream guy basically. He definitely acts like he is too cool for school, like someone who doesn't care about much and is pretty laid back and easy going, that is why I like him so much. He had a huge impact on the story already, as you know if you are reading Chinese Handcuffs, Dillion is the brother of a guy who committed suicide and is still trying to put the pieces back together and how this came to be such a mess. He is currently struggling to figure out which person he likes more either the girl he has loved every since he was little, or the girl that is a all star basketball player and has the looks and the brains. That is only one of many problems that Dillion is facing right now. Yes I would be more than friends with this Dillion fella heheh. He plays the role of the hero but also can be seen as a villain is some eyes like some of his teachers and principal. Yes the book would change because he tells most of the story through his letters to his brother Preston.

    2. I do feel some things that Dillon has felt like having a hard time with girls. I do hope he gets over his brother's death.

    3. I have the same description you had of Dillon because of what the book had said about his athletic build. I just don't know if I could be friends with him because he does a lot of things by himself. I think if I was friends with him I would be able to help him through his problems he has.

  24. I imagine Coach Sherman as my favorite sister because they both listen to peoples problems and help out as much as possible. Coach Sherman has helped both Dillon and Jen with personal issues that they had with their families and relationships. I think I would like to be friends with Coach Sherman because she seems nice and open to conversations that would help a student. If Coach Sherman wasn't in the book, I think the whole outcome would be different because Dillon and Jen wouldn't have anyone vent to or discuss issues with.

    1. I agree, coach Sherman has helped influence Jennifer and Dillons actions and behavior in the story, she is a big influence on them.

      Delete
    2. Sounds like coach Sherman is a great coach. I wish we had a great coach in Running loose. Instead we have a rotten coach that wants to win anyway possible even if that means playing dirty. If we had a coach like Sherman then Louie would have never made a fool of himself and would still be playing football his senior year.

      Delete
    3. Wish we had coach sherman in our book running loose because he is a good coach. Instead of a good coach we have coach lednecky who is determined to win at the football games even if the team had to do stuff that is not right. If sherman was the coach then I believe that Louie would still be playing instead of getting kicked off the team his senior year.

      Delete
    4. I agree that Coach Sherman has had a big impact on Dillon's and Jen's lives. Especially when she took Jen's sister home it showed that she is willing to help people. It is true if Coach Sherman wasn't there Dillon and Jen would have more trouble getting through their problems.

  25. I choose Carter in the book Running Loose. I see Carter as a role-model. He is always good be-having and is a leader of the football team. Carter has had a few very strong impacts up to this point in the book. The first one is when Carter pushed Louie to work out all summer so he's in shape for football. Next, when Louie quit Carter supported his choice, but he also tried talking Carter into joining the team again without forcing him to. I would be friends with Carter because he's a extremely nice person. In this book Carter is Louies best friend and the quarter back on the football team. If Carter wasn't in the book I believe it would change. I believe it would change because Carter is the go to friend when Louie has to talk about something. If he's not there to talk to Louie could have different decisions.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I also am reading running loose and i would defiantly want to be one of carters best friends also. He would support you no matter the decision, right or wrong. Just like when Carter checks in with Louie when he made a fool of himself at the second football game. That is true friendship.

    2. I agree with you that Carter is like a role-model and is a good friend because of the way he pushes Louie to work out to be in shape for football. I would also be friends with him because he seems like an easy guy to talk to and will support you no matter what. I also agree that the book would change if Carter wasn't in the book because without Carter Louie probably would not have worked all summer for football and he has a big impact in Louie's life by protecting him and the way he supports Louie through everything.

  26. For Running Loose I'm choosing Boomer. I believe that in our school district if we had a guy like Boomer, racist, bigoted and overall unhygienic, he would be absolutely teared apart. I don't believe that Mr. Feldmann or Mr. Hatcher quite care about sports as much as Jasper did in Running Loose. Boomer would be the kind of guy that used to be popular and everyone's friend, but after pulling a stunt like he did for coach Lednecky, he would be a very, very unpopular guy. I would never be friends with a guy like him. He definitely plays the antagonistic role and I think the story would be way less agonizing without him in it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I definitely agree with how you feel boomer would fit in in the school if he did that. I would also not become friends with someone who pulled a stunt like that. I feel people like that are wrong and holding us back as a human race.

  27. The character I chose is Louie from Running Loose. I picture Louie in my head as a tall, built guy, every smart, brown hair and really gives it his all when it comes to sports. In the book it says that Louie goes up to the football field after he cleans the bar also after practice and will run that shows how he really wanted that championship. Louie has had a big impact on the story because he wanted to win the game the right way not by playing rough and mean. Louie would be a great friend to have he would be there for you at anytime. Louie plays the main character in the book Running Loose. If Louie was not in the book it would be totally different I feel like Boomer would take over the story because Boomer loves the attention.

  28. The character i want to right about in the main character and that is Louie. I kind of think about myself when i picture him just in a smaller school setting. Louie is around my height, weighs the same amount, plays the same potion i did in football, and inst the star by any means on the team. Louie went against the whole team and stood up for the black guy that got hurt even when people didn't want him to and he wouldn't play football anymore. i think me and him would be close just because of how many things we have in common. without this character in the book there would be no book because the whole book is about him.

  29. I choose Nortie because hes a very strong character in this book. He goes through tons of abuse and neglect and still manages to keep marching. When he tells his friends at Stotan week about his brother it really shows his character. Imagine being a young boy and seeing your 13 year old role model hanging there, that must have been terrifying for young Nortie. This book wouldn't even be half the story without Nortie. Nortie is the one gluing everyone eyes to the book and making it worth while to read. Nortie is the goat. xoxo Gossip Girl

  30. I am going to choose Preston, Dillons older brother for my main character, at first I envisioned him as the leader of the two with the opening scene about them being younger and he was the one who had suggested the actions. I imagine him being the kid that stopped being the center of attention due to his little brother being born so he started acting out and rebelling, he talks about being the less successful of the two brothers, being jealous of how much taller, stronger, and more athletic his younger brother Dillon is. Preston has a gigantic impact on the story, being he was one of the first characters introduced on the back cover's summary. If i were not brothers with Preston, I would choose not to be friends with him, with him being involved in some illegal activities, and more, I would not feel safe around that man. If Preston was not in the story, Dillons entire side of the story would change drastically, seeing as he is the reason Dillon is suffering what he is suffering through, I believe the story would be a completely different story.

  31. I am reading running loose and Boomer is one of the characters in the book. Boomer is the big scary would cheat to win kinda guy. He is very obnoxious and very violent. he does not like the main character which is Louie (they go way back). Boomer has a pretty important role/impact on Louie. He keeps Louie on his toes for what could happen next and Louie is always watching his 6. I would never want to be boomers friend. He is one of those people that does not really have friends but when he is around you nobody is going to tell him to leave. I would 100% try to avoid him at all cost. And that is what Louie tries to do but boomer makes that impossible. This is because Boomer plays the role of the kid that gets abused by his parents so he takes it out on his peers and makes him self be the big scary bully of Trout High School.

  32. The character I chose is Louie Banks from the book Running Loose. I envision Louie has a built and good looking guy who is brave and determined. Louie has had a major impact on the story by going against his coach and standing up for what he believes is right. Without Louie the book would be totally different and would not teach the readers any life lessons. I would definitely be friends with Louie because he seems like a pretty chill guy to hangout with and I respect how brave he was standing up to his coach. Louie plays the role of the main character in Running Loose and is also the protagonist. If Louie was not in the book it would be different because the entire story would change from the boy who took a stand to the team that plays dirty football.

    2. I agree with the fact that Louie is a great guy, he is someone who isn't afraid to stick their necks for the right reason. He doesn't ask for much and he always seems to bring his best to the table in every situation. without him the the story wouldn't have the same effect.

  33. I am reading Running Loose and the character that I chose was Carter. I envision Carter as the average looking guy and a good role-model for the football team. Carter looks in my head as tall, built guy with blonde hair and really passionate especially when it comes to the football team or just football in general. Carter acts like a really good motivator to Louie when it came to cleaning the bar. I believe that I would be friends with Carter because he is a passionate and caring guy who would be a good motivator to anyone to do their very best. Carter plays an important role in Running loose because he helps out Louie when he needed it so he could get better at football. If Carter was not in Running loose then the book would be different because I believe that without Carter then Louie would not be motivated by working out all summer so he could get better at football.

  34. I chose to write about Louie and if there is one word I would use to describe him, I'd say respectful. Louie is respectful because he is not mean to anyone and especially when Boomer took down the star player of Salmon River, Washington on purpose. Louie did not agree that is how to play football and he stood up for what he believed in and he had every reason to. He did not have to stand up and speak in what he believed in, but I think it's great to do something like that because it takes a lot of guts. Trying to envision him through out the book, I feel like he is really scrawny, not to tall, and in great shape from working out all the time during the summer. I think Louie has impacted the book a lot by standing up for Washington and some people agree with him, but they are not making as big as an impact as Louie is and speaking up. Louie would be such a good friend because not only is he respectful , he is hard working and people like that are always good to have in your life. He is the main character in the book and without him in the book their would not have been the problem of racism and the book would be boring because Louie brings it all together.

  35. The character I am writing about is Walker. He is a main character with a lot of heart and loves his friends. When I think of Walker I think of a very mature, thoughtful, clean, and sensitive guy. Walker has a HUGE impact in the story. He is the kind of guy that all his friends love and go to when they are in need. For example, Nortie another main character in the book had a huge problem. Nortie works at a daycare and one little kid was going around calling people horrible names and Nortie told him to stop but the kid spit in his face and Nortie accidentally hit the kid. He ran straight to Walkers house and told him what happened. This shows that Nortie trusts and knows Walker will help as much as possible. I would want to be friends with Walker because of the way he acts and his love for his friends. Walkers role in the book isn't only to be a friend, he is the guy that leads the group. If Walker was not in the book there wouldn't be a true leader for the friend group .

  36. The character I am choosing is TB from Chinese Handcuffs. It's strange that his real name is never told and only his initials are said. TB seems like the kind of man that thinks he's the tough guy and takes control in every situation but is way too controlling towards other people. TB is like that one person you meet that seems nice and sketchy the same time where you don't want to know what he does when you're not around. The character is definitely impacting the book but not in a great way. He's abusing to Jennifer's mother, threatened Jennifer, and also did some horrific things to Jennifer. He is not the type of man to mess with and for sure wouldn't want to go anywhere near him. If he wasn't in the novel, Jennifer wouldn't be scarred for the rest of her life, and scared of any boy. Sadly in today's society sexual abuse is very common so Jennifer can be like anyone who has ever experienced it. TB is the horrible man that any woman would be terrified to come across because of his outbursts of domestic violence and damaging behavior.

  37. I'm reading Chinese Handcuffs, and I picked Jennifer. She is athletic and quite a character. There are secrets she came out to tell us throughout the book so far. They're things many teens struggle with but don't come out to tell people all the time. She goes to the hospital after hitting her head on the gym floor. She wants her coach to watch her little sister for her and not call her parents. This was suspicious and you eventually realize why. Her stepdad isn't to be trusted because of things he's done secretly to Jennifer. She was threatened to never tell. I think I would be friends with her because she reminds me a lot like myself. She's been through traumatizing things and she's very good at hiding it. Dillon and Jen have a unique friendship. Jennifer can really trust him with her secrets. I know how Jennifer feels about trusting people though. I can make the connection with my life and Jennifer's life. If Jennifer wasn't in the story, Dillon would be suffering with the death of Preston all alone with no one to turn to. Jennifer would be stuck with no one to talk to about her stepdad if Dillon wasn't in the story. They both have to be in the story for them to be able to talk to each other about the things they've been through. Everyone should have someone there for them and they have the perfect friendship. The book would be completely different if they both weren't in it.

  39. The character I will be choosing is Jen from Chinese Handcuffs. Jen is an amazing basketball player who tries to keep her personal life, personal. She excels in the classroom on the court, and sadly, her parents fail to recognize her true talent. In fact while going head to head with another top school, her main focus was to not let the star player score, so it was very interesting to see that game unfold. Jen scored the winning shot, even after having a nasty fall on the ground and ending up with an avocado sized bump on her head. If I had to imagine what Jen would look like, I would imagine her just as the book describes her: 6 feet tall, athletic build, blonde hair to the shoulders, and always determined to be the best at what she is doing. She is one of Dillon's two crushes, but she is definitely my favorite out of the two. If she was not a character in the book, it would be basically just about Dillon and Preston's relationship, and we would only be hearing about their story.

  40. I'm choosing to write about Jen from Chinese Handcuffs. I imagine her to be like Megan Maahs because she's the star basketball player on her team. Jen gets good grades, is highly praised by her coach and is protective of her sister. You would think her parents would be just as proud of her as her teammates and coach, but they honestly couldn't care less about her achievements. Her stepdad is physically/ mentally abusive to her mom and sexually/mentally abusive to her. Although all of this is going on at home you would never guess it by talking to her. I feel like she's such an important character in the book because she's someone for Dillon to talk to and she helps him cope with the loss of his brother. Without them having each other, Jen would probably lose her mind and Dillon would go off the deep end

  41. I chose the character Jen from Chinese Handcuffs. I picture Jen being tall because she is the best basketball player. I also imagine her having brown hair and always smiling at school. Jen impacts the story because of the abuse she has endured from her dad and step-dad. This impacts Dillon because he knows he should tell someone, just like he should have told someone about his brothers problems. If i went to school with her i would be friends with her because of her positive attitude toward school and sports. Jen's role in the book is showing how to overcome problems and excel. If she wasn't in the book then Dillon wouldn't have a person showing him how to move past his brothers suicide.

  42. I'm writing about Nortie in one of the main charterers in Stotan. He is best friends with the main character in this book he is a big loving guy. I think he would be a big loving guy that wouldn't hurt a fly. He works at a daycare and he helps little kids in a rough neighborhood. He is a really good guy but he hit a kid at daycare the one day because the kid spit in hes face. That is the only time Nortie has ever hit any thing. He was raised in a bad family and his mom and dad abused him so i kinda fell bad for him.

  43. I really like Nortie in the book Stotan. I envision him as a very athletic and built kid that under estimates his capabilities. Nortie is one of the most built and athletic swimmer on his swim team but he he always worries about hard workouts and always needs to know exactly what he is getting his self into. So far I think Nortie has left a pretty good impact in this book because with out him the book wouldn't be as exciting and suspenseful about stotan week it probably would've gotten straight to the point. I would be friends with Nortie because he seems pretty nice and cool and we both always need to know what we are getting are selves into so we can prepare for it. I think Nortie plays the role of always being worried and over estimating everything and making things more exciting. If Nortie was not in this book it would be a whole lot different because most of the book is leaving people wait to see what stotan week is and making it suspenseful and Nortie enhances that because is seem pretty worried about it and no none will tell him or the reader what it is.

  44. I am going to choose Louie from Running Loose because I feel I know the most about him. I can picture Louie tall with dirty blonde hair and has kinda curly hair, although it doesn't say that in the book that's what I picture him as. Louie acts like he is never good enough for anything like sports or Becky. He obviously is good at football because he is in varsity and is a starter and Becky likes him as well. Another way to describe Louie is always standing up for what he believes in, when the coach wanted to hurt the player on the team so they could win Louie didn't want anything to do with it. He stood up for what he believes in by quitting football. I feel like I would be friends with Louie because he is works hard for what he wants but also is always is there for his friends. Louie plays the role of the main character the story is all from his perspective. If Louie wasn't in the book, the book would change a lot because Carter or Boomer would have to narrate the story and it would be very different because of the different perspective.

    1. That sounds like Dillon from Chinese Handcuffs. He likes Jen but when she finally agrees to go on a date with him, it's super awkward and he beats himself up for it. Dillon doesn't necessarily stand up for what he believes in so much as rebels against what he doesn't like

  45. One of the more interesting characters in this book that I can relate to is Nortie. I just see a lot of myself in this character except for the fact that he is on a swim team, and I would never dream of doing that. In this book it says that Nortie works really well with kids. I too work really well with kids. I kind of picture this character looking some what like Carter Kramer mixed with Carver Conway don't ask why that is just how I picture him. If Nortie was not in this story I think that it would be missing its most interesting character because he just adds something interesting to this story that no other character does. Like his background on how his Dad beats him, as bad as this sounds I find that kinda interesting. Without Nortie this story would kinda just be boring.

    1. Carter Kramer mixed with carver conway? Are you kidding me i more see this Nortie kid looking like Chris Chambers on stand by me. But i do agree with you about how if Nories story wasn't i here this book would be garbage.

    2. I also agree the story wouldnt be the same without him in this book

  46. I pick Louie for my character review in the book running loose. i picture him as a little smaller guy not real strong. he is kind of a shy guy but he seems to get along well with others except for one of the other characters they call boomer witch is kind of a bully. i think i could probably friends with Louie because he seems pretty down to earth and i like that stuff. without him in the story we would lose the perspective he gives.

    1. I imagine Louie to be smaller to, I would also be friends with him because he sticks up for what he believes in and would do anything for anyone. The story would be very different if he was not in it because it would change the purpose for the book.

  47. i imagine Dillon from Chinese Handcuffs as a football line backer because they describe him as some one to big for his age. And because he finished first place in his age group during a triathlon which takes extreme conditioning just to finish i don't know if i would be friends with this character or not, because he seems to keep to himself for the most part. Dillon is a main character who helps Jen get through her troubled past while dealing with his own barriers as well. If Dillon were not in the book i feel like there wouldn't be a book to read because the the book is about Jen and Dillon helping each other and if he is not there then what is it about.

  48. I am choosing Dillon for my character review from Chinese Handcuffs. I think Dillon looks like a huge dude. He seems like he would be at least 6'3 and really fit. Dillon has had the a big impact on the book because he is the main character and kind of tells the story. I don't think I would be friends with Dillon because of his attitude towards things. He also seems really selfish so I don't know if I would like that. Dillon's role in Chinese Handcuffs is that he is the main character and the book tells you what has happened to him. If Dillon wasn't in the book it would lose a big part of it. It would lose this because it explains how he lost his brother and what he does about. Also he helps Jen through her troubled past, so then we wouldn't know much about what she has been through.

  49. I imagine Mr. Caldwell as a grumpy old man because he only likes traditions and hates anyone that breaks any tradition he believes in. He also is harsh to the students in his school. Mr. Caldwell has been an obstacle to Dillon so far in my book because he keeps attacking Dillon for not respecting the school and not joining track when he does not even respects Dillon's private issues. I would avoid him because I think he should have his teaching licences revoked for treating the students with little respect. He does not hold himself back when attacking Dillon, even bringing up his dead brother. If Mr. Caldwell was removed from the book, Dillon would not have somebody to try to keep him in check, but also he would not have an obstacle to concur himself.

  50. I think Dillon from Chinese handcuffs is a tall and strong kid that everyone knows but they do not really talk to him because of his brother and because he is always fighting with the principle.
Also he looks like he would be a very good athlete except for the fact that he wont share his talents with the school.

  51. I am choosing to describe the character Preston from the booking "Chinese Handcuffs." I envision Preston in a wheel chair because he got paralyzed in a motorcycle accident, with shaggy dark brown hair. I imagine him not keeping up with his personal hygiene very well because he is not a very good kid, he is apart of a gang and is on drugs. Preston has had a big impact on the story this far because he killed himself right in front of his brother and a death impact everyone close to the person that died. Preston also made a big impact on his family because his mother and sister moved away because they did not want to be apart of his life anymore. Preston plays the role of the rebel child as some might say, he is the brother of the main character and most of the book revolves around Preston. If Preston was not in the book the story would changed a lot, it would be a completely different story, because the main character would not be going through this huge loss and he probably would be dating Stacy which is Preston's girlfriend and the girl he has always had a crush on.

  52. I choosing to describe the character Carter for Running Loose. To me he is like a typical Hollywood jock. He would be tall and muscular, and very athletic. Have blonde hair with a little stubble. He impacts the story because he sticks up for Louie. Louie (his best friend) gets in trouble with the football team and Carter tries to get the couch to let him back on the team. He sets up a meeting just for Louie but it does not end up the way he had hopes. If Carter was a real person I would be friends with him, because he always looks out for everyone's best interest. He did not agree with what happened at the football game and that is why he is helping Louie to get back on the team. His role in the book is to keep things together and make the football team better. If he was not in the book it would change because then Louie would not have anyone looking out for him.

    1. Carter seems like a great guy and sounds like a good teammate. That sucks that things didn't go the way wanted them to go though. I hope you like the book because it sounds interesting.

  53. So I am choosing the character Jen. She is an athletic, tall, basketball player who is a key player on her team. She is a leader who will do anything for her team. She has a big role in this story because she WAS the main characters older brothers' girlfriend. So Dillon (The main character) is in pickle between her and another girl Stacy. I feel like Jen is good hearted and a friendly person. She has been through a lot and adds to the story. I feel like if she was not in the story the book would be lacking in the shock department.

    1. Jen seems like a really nice person. She reminds me of some of the players on our team for basketball. What do you mean by Dillon is in a pickle between her and Stacy?

  54. The character I'm choosing to write about is Louie because he is probably my favorite character in the book so far. A word that describes Louie is purposeful because I feel like everything he does is for a purpose. Like when he tries at practice unlike Boomer it's because he is actually determined and wants to get better at what he does, and tries to help the team. I would be friends with Louie because he is a nice guy in the story and always pushes people to be their best. And without Louie in this story it would just be plain and boring because he is the main character.

  55. I am choosing to write about the character Sarah Byrnes. I imagine her with run marks all over her face and hands. I imagine she would be pretty if she didn't have the burns all over her. I imagine that she is strong, stubborn, and stuck up. Sarah Byrnes is the reason Eric stayed fat for so long and ruined his health. Is she were a real person, I don't think I would be her friend. The way she faked her illness and put herself in the hospital is not something I look for in a friend. If she weren't in the story, I have a tiny feeling that Eric would not be alive. I have a feeling that Dale would have gotten to him. I think Sarah Byrnes made him a strong person and thought him the importance of friendship.

  56. I’m going to choose Nortie from the book Stotan. He is one of the most interesting character in the book and he is always keeping the reads into the book. I imagine this character as a guy about 5 foot 11 blonde hair always in the weight room lifting and trying to stay in shape. But being a swimmer you have to be in good physical condition. He acts like more laid back but always worried about things that he doesn’t need to be I think then any other people in the book. Nortie impacted the book by just adding small details in the book that if you did not know it would not keep you reading. Something big in the story is when he tells people that his dad beats him and his mom. That just shows how much him and his mom has been through and what it’s like growing up at home. If I had to be friends with Nortie I think I would get along with him good because he is working for a trophy and when I was in a sport I was to but we are both laid back but always more worried about little thing. If Nortie wasn’t in this book it wouldn’t be interesting to me because he keeps it going and is always talking and tell people thing about his life and then the book would be different just because nothing would be the same and talking about his dad beating him.

    1. i agree with you that was one really big part in the story when you find out Nortie gets beat.

  57. In my book I picture Sarah Byrnes as a tall blonde. At the beginning i thought she was super clumsy. She had spilled hot spaghetti on her and that burned her face and hands. I later found out that her dad is the one who actually burned her. As of right now in my book Sarah is at the hospital in the psychiatric unit. She isn't talking or speaking to anyone. Not even her best friend Eric.

  58. In my book I picture Louie as a kid kinda like me tall not really big and built but overall pretty solid. I also think we act the same. I think this because we both grown up in a small town and were both pretty down to earth. I feel like if he wasn't in the book it would be complete different because he is the main character in the book so the book would be way different.

  59. The character i choose is Eric. I envision him as a bigger kid, not fat but more muscle. He seems like a very protective person when it comes to his friends, and just seems to want the best for Sarah. Eric is one of the main characters in the book and plays a large part. He is the best friend to Sarah and helps explain everything throughout the story(in his point of view). I would be friends with him because i like how he has always been there to care about Sarah through the ups and downs. That what friends are for, and i believe he is a great friend to Sarah even though she takes him for granted sometimes.

  60. When i first started trying to write this blog it was very hard because there wasnt any character descriptions until i got to page 40. I found the first character desciption was about devnee and it was walker. He said she is smart, with a tiny waist and great pecs, dark green eyes , and almost black hair. She is in the honor society and she plays piano like a pro. I would probably avoid her because all of those people are always about themselves except to the people she is already friends with

  61. The character i choose is Nortie because through out the book Nortie had a rough time. He had a rough time because his dad was abusive to him and never treated him right. Throught out the book all of the characters were there for nortie because they knew that he had a rough home life. If Nortie wasn't in this book the book would change a lot because Nortie is there throughout the whole book and was a big part of it.
