  1. My novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, caught my attention when we were reading random pages in class. In the excerpt Rasheed forced Mariam to eat rocks because that is what her rice tastes like. The first chapters of the book moved slow and the farther I read the faster the book moved. From the start I have enjoyed the book and how the characters are growing and learning.

    1. I forgot about the random page we read but I would agree with you. I'm anxious to get to the chapter where Rasheed forces Miriam to eat rocks.

    2. That also caught my attention when reading the random pages but I really wanted to read about World War II.

    3. That caught my attention that a husband could be so cruel and make his wife eat rocks.. It really shocks me and is very eyeopening to me as well.

    4. I am reading the book Night and I understand how you feel about the start of your book. My book started out slow but then it started to pick up. It was interesting at the beginning, but he never really explained things that happened in the prologue.

  2. I think A Thousand Splendid Suns was a little bit of a slow start. The book has very unusual names, which made it harder to keep focused while reading. When you keep coming to a word you don’t know you’re correctly pronouncing, it gets frustrating. But, by chapter five I was hooked. When Miriam was forced to go back home by Jalil’s driver, she saw her mom, Nana, hanging from the tree. Even though Nana said she would kill herself if Miriam left, I didn’t think she would actually do it. Since then, Miriam has been forced to marry a forty year old man, Rasheed, even though she was only fifteen and forced to give herself to Rasheed because ‘that’s what married people do.’ A lot has happened so far in the book and I never know what to expect at this point.

    3. I also got confused with the names and words, but after a couple chapters I was hooked.

    4. I agree with you that the names make it hard to to read and that the book can be a little frustrating, but i think the book is worth the struggle because of how interesting the book is becoming.

  3. What attracted me to this novel was honestly the picture on the cover. I know that sounds stupid, but the picture of the young boy carrying RPG missile on the cover really just hooked me. The first few chapters of this novel were definitely written the way they were to get you hooked on the story that is being told. Then after you're hooked, that is when he starts going into the backstory of how these events came to be. My first reaction of this book is that it is very gruesome and gory, but none the less it is definitely got me hooked.

    1. I also liked the picture on the cover. It made me want to know what this kid is going through and how he manages to get through it.

    2. I also judge a book by its cover. I know they tell you not to do that but I always have. If the cover looks dull I most likely will not read the book.

    3. The picture just makes you wonder how this is possible and you want to know more about his story

      Delete
    4. I agree with you, the book hooks you right away. But it also slows down and speed up almost every other paragraph which distracted me at some points. I still think it's a good book so far though.

  4. in the book a thousand splendid suns .i think that this book that this book is very interesting first few chapters there is a lot that goes on in the first part . it moves by very fast . mariams mom seemed to a very rude person who is really mean to jajil behind his back and mean to mariam. and nana killed herself because mariam went to Herat to find her dad jajil and he basically turned his back on her. i think nana over reacted alot to mariam when she went to find jalil i dont think it was right to kill herself.

    1. I agree. Nana would call Miriam names and make her feel unwanted but, then she would turn around and say she loves Miriam more than anyone. Jalil seemed like a great dad in the beginning but that quickly changed when Jalil turned his back on her.

      Delete
    2. That's a good thing that the book is moving by fast, that indicates it is a good book. That is not a good thing that that are talking behind someones back. I would have to agree with you that nana over reacted .

  5. A thousand splendid suns is a very different book than any other book i have read. The book covers many topics in Afghan from arranged marriage to the civil war they are facing. the book is not as graphic or as rage inducing as Chinese Handcuffs but does leave you mystified as to parts of their culture. The book shows you how different some culture around the world are. So I really like the book, especially how it starts off strong. The book sucks you into the book fairy quickly, within the first two chapters. The only bad part about the book is that it struggles a little to keep you in the book and i often find myself taking breaks and coming back to the book later. I think the reason for that it is hard to follow sometimes. the unique and odd named of the cities and people make me have to reread passages two or three times and dampens the book.

    1. This book was my second choice to read and I chose it not knowing much about it. I chose it from basically just reading the page from the book. This book seems to be very interesting because I have always wondered what it would be like to actually live in a different countries. I have heard little stories about what it would be like but nothing major so I feel like this book would be good for me to read.

  6. I was attracted to A Long Way Gone because I wanted to know what Ishmael went through, seeing the picture on the front of the book and seeing what he is wearing and carrying made me want know his story. My initial thoughts of my book is at first I was confused, but after reading a few more chapters I understood what was happening. Our book did not have a slow start at all. The book began by them getting attacked and it was very graphic. It's hard to believe the things this 12 year old is going through. I can't imagine going through what he is going through.

    2. I agree that the book is shocking . Ishmael has gone through lots of hard situations that would be very traumatic for a young boy.

      Delete
    3. The trauma that one can go though is insane, and yet he had the strength to tell his story.. I think this book would be one of my other top choices. It is hard to believe someone so young could survive and live to tell about it.

    4. This sounds like a good book and I like how it grabbed your attention right away. It would be interesting to learn about what he had to go through to survive and tell his story. That takes strength to share your story with others. Learning his story would keep me interested throughout the book because he's so young.

    5. I agree the beginning of this novel is very very graphic. But that is also what kinda got me hooked, like when that mother was carrying her dead baby on her back. As sad as it is to say, that is really what hooked me.

    6. Your book was my first choice but I got Night and it is also really graphic. In the second chapter, they just got to the concentration camp and they had a fiery ditch and Nazis pushed people in it and Elie Wiesel and his father were two feet away then they were called to the barracks.

  7. I was interested in Kite runner, because I thought it was interesting the plot line, and the paper of the preview we read. The start of the book was slow, it gave an outline of the history and the information, about race, and how the hazans are the minority and they are servants to others, But once the introduction got over the story instantly pulled me in. The story of Amir and Hazzan is really good they are great friends and the way they react to the things that happen is very relate able to what we do. I am very interested in what will happen in the future.

  8. I was attracted to Night because it is about World War II, my favorite time in history. It is a very sad and difficult book to read but I like it so far. It was a slow start and now it has sped up quite a bit. At the beginning it was talking about what was happening before the war started, after that, everything began to sped up pretty quickly, they are now in the concentration camps. It is hard reading about what went down from a personal point of view. Hearing all of the things that were going on inside his head. It is very interested but again the way he writes it can be very easily to miss something and have to reread the page all over again.

  9. What attracted me to A Long Way Gone was the passage we read. It was suspenseful and hooked from that point. Also the picture on the front of the book, it made me want to know more about how little kid is party of an army. My first initial thought of this book is that it is awful what is happening to these people. The rebels that are suppose to be fighting for them , kill them and enslave them. The beginning of this boom jumps right into it, it starts in present time and it goes right into a flashback into it all.

  10. My book, A Long Way Gone, attracted me because I'm interested in war novels. It interested me because I have never heard of this conflict before and I was intrigued about how this was viewed through the eyes of a 12 year-old kid. This book, to me, started out fast and slow at the same time. The book can spend two pages on an afternoon and then a paragraph on three months. I understand that book would be extremely long if the author described everything that he saw, but you need to pick a pace and stick with it. You need to have slow moments in a novel to give the reader a chance to breathe, but don't make it slow every other paragraph. Besides that, this book intrigues me very much, I appreciate the fact that the author doesn't hold back on the details of his experience, even if I had to put the book down at some points because of how dark the book gets.

  11. The book A Long Way Gone is very interesting so far. I was attracted to this book by the passage we read in class. It talked about some of the stuff that Ishmael has seen. Ishmael is a 12 year old boy and it about his life during a war. It's hard to believe the things he has gone through. I felt like it started out slow but it gave us an introduction to Ishmael and his family. It difficult to read sometimes because of the graphic scenes but also trying to keep the characters straight can be tough.

  12. My book called A Long Way Gone attracted me because it is about the civil war in Africa during the 1980's. So far the book is very good and I feel bad for all those people that died there. The book starts right before Ishmael's village was attacked by the rebels. This book is very dark, but it is a very good book. All the things that Ishmael had to go through is very surprising to me because I would have gave up on life, but Ishmael just kept going through with his ruined life.

I was attracted to this book because of the passage we read in class. Also since it is about this guys story of trying to escape the civil war in his country. When he was 12 he had to go through some very tough times for a kid that age. The author in this book goes into a lot of detail of everything that happens so it is hard to read at times. So far this book has been really good to read and will only get better.

I also wanted to see how this civil war was and what it was like to be involved in those events. The fact that he is providing for himself at 12 not knowing if his family is okay or not kid of describes him. Ishmael is a sneaky kid that has smarts and does not travel with large packs. 17. I am reading Night, I chose this book because I have always been interested in the holocaust. This book has a forward which is a few pages long but other than that I would say it pretty much just jumps right into the story. There is not as much detail as I thought there would be like compared to the movie that we watched in US History about the holocaust. This book has pretty much met my standards and I can not wait to keep reading and learn more about Elie's journey.

  18. I chose Night because I have always been interested in first hand accounts of the Holocaust. It really intrigues me that humankind can be so cruel. In the first few chapters Elie talks about his life as a Jew in the 1940's. His first hand account of the liquidation of the Ghettos and the terrible concentration camp Auschwitz. He along side of his father go though horrible living conditions, and are accompanied by many others who do not know where or if their families are alive. Their forced to work, or their life will be taken. The horrible sights they see and the horrible conditions they live under really shock me.

My initial thoughts about the book so far are that Ishmael is having horrific experiences at such a young age. 26. I am reading "I Am Malala" and I chose it because it seemed interesting. I enjoy the view of a girl because I feel I can relate a little better. Although this book isn't that bad, I kind of regret not reading the book "Night". There's a lot more information about history than the story of her life. Some parts are a little confusing because of all the history that goes along with her story. I feel like it's more of a history lesson so far in the book. Some parts are ok when she talks about her childhood. I'm still trying to understand the Taliban and how they're allowed to control everyone but its a good history lesson for me. I wish she talked a little bit more about herself rather than the government, but I understand the government plays a big role in the book.

    1. I agree that it feels like a history lesson! I also agree that she should include more about her or her childhood because that is when I get the aha moment. It is so much easier when they relate it to their real life or something that is going on in today's world. But like you said government plays a BIG role.

    2. I am currently reading Night and although it does focus more on the personal issues, they are very strong issues. Some of these pages are heartbreakingly hard to read. Take pg. 63 for example, "A boy of thirteen, beat his father for not making his bed properly." In this book you practically read about people changing to the point in which they are morally messed up and emotionally destroyed. Its like reading about someones soul deteriorating.

  27. The main reason I chose I am Malala is because it looked like one of the most interesting options, and it is about a young woman around my age. I was expecting the novel to take off right away, but the book so far is very slow and it makes me not have ambition to read it. Occasionally the book will take off and have big events or it goes by much faster, but those parts don't last very long. The girl has a interesting life with many ups and downs and describes it well. No wonder she received a Nobel Piece Prize at such a young age

  28. My book Along way gone attracted me because of the cover. I saw a young boy caring a weapon of war. I wanted to know what the young boy had to go through and some of the things he had to experience at such a young age. The book was kind of slow at the beginning but only because it was very confusing. The book began to pick up once i started reading more. The group of boys get so lucky and then there luck runs out and you just wanna know what happens next.

    2. That is how my book was. my book was very confusing, they gave a history about the people in the book Kite runner, and it took a while for the story to actually begin. and for me to fully understand what is happening.

  29. I'm reading Night by Elie Wisele. I wanted to read this book due to the fact that I always thought WWII was really interesting, because of all that was going on during and after the war. I also wanted to read Night because my father had the second book in Elie Wisele's series. In the beginning they were in their town then Germans came and they treated the Jews well for a week or two then they captured the Jewish high priest and arrested him. They were then put into ghettos where they were told they would be transported away from their town because it was close to the war front. Overall it is a very good book and I
am looking forward to reading the rest of it.

    1. I wish I would have read this book because the holocaust really intrigues me and I would like to read more about it and the stories behind some of the jews. I heard it was really gruesome and hard to read but I think it might have been better then my book right now. It is also shorter than Malala and that might have helped me as well to be able to get into it better.

  30. I am reading I Am Malala, because when we did the blind read this was my number one choice. It really caught my attention. After reading the first couple chapters of I Am Malala I didn't think I was going to like the book. But I talked to some people who read the book before and they said the first chapter is the hardest to understand and they just give you a whole bunch of background information. Once I got passed the first chapter I really liked how Malala put in her life events like when she had to read a speech at her school just like, her dad had to read a speech in the public speaking competition. Another thing I liked was how they tell us about their culture like how the pray in the village by watching the sunset with the black and white mountains.

    1. Thats how it was for me as well. The first couple chapters were very confusing, It was more of a history report than a story haha. I found it very interesting once i got about to chapter 3 and now im getting a love for the characters and their story

  31. As i started reading a long way gone things started right off the bat the boys learned rap what rap music was which got him through a lot of rough times when later on his village was attacked by rebels and he had no idea what to think of all the blood and guts that he saw so he listened to rap to escape it all.

    1. OK slow down.... There's a town full of blood and guts and stuff right? But, is this story focusing more on music then that? I'm just questioning because I'm not reading this book and I am slightly confused from the description. After reading a few of the descriptions on books I thought that the majority focused on the death and madness of what was going on in there worlds, so what exactly is this one focusing on?

  32. I was attracted to this novel because I really enjoy reading about war and how they lived. I just could not believe Ishmael had to fight in this war at the age of 12. After reading the first initial chapters I was very confused at the beginning of the book because there were so many different words that I have never said before. Now that I am getting deeper in the book it is getting easier and I am really starting to get hook and I cannot put the book down. I think why it was so confusing because they really jump right into it and as the reader it is confusing but after a couple chapters you catch up and I am really getting hooked.

  34. What attracted me to A Long Way Gone was wondering what it was like for a kid to go through what he's going through. At the beginning of the book the boys didn't have a care in the world or know what hard times are. Soon the rebels attack and their whole world is turned upside down on the run from the rebels. The story starts out slow then picks up and hooks you.

  36. The Novel I choose to read was Night by Elie Wiesel.I have always had an interest in reading this book, but I don't actually read in my spare time. So, Hey the opportunity presented its self! While reading this I thought it had a pretty slow start. One that made me super mad because the author's family was not only warned about the murder but had opportunities to escape it that just walked by. As I got farther into it the book it began to pick up. I guess the part that really caught my attention was an older women with only her son and missing the rest of her family had been screaming on the train to the camp. I'm excited to keep reading because this story only gets more twisted and awful from there. Not to mention its a story full of truth.

  43. My book that I Am reading is I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. It's about a girl who lives in Pakistan and she really enjoys going to school and getting a education. But there is a catch, there are bad people in her country called the T-ban that don't like her very much. One day she was on a bus and hr T-ban came and shot her in the head. Pretty much it is about a girl fighting for her life and her right for women to get education. This book is going VERY SLOW so far. It is almost painful to read to be honest. I hope it gets interesting pretty soon because it is hard to read right now. The first impression is okay because it starts the a prologue that talks about how the T-ban attacked her which was cool to read about. Hopefully the book gets rolling pretty quick otherwise this will be a hard couple weeks.

  44. I am reading Long Way Gone and the beginning of the book was kinda confusing. I chose this book because when we did the readings in class it seemed like a good book to read. The beginning went right into a flashback, then went to present. Through out the book there has been flashbacks and sometimes you can not tell if it is present of past and you get a little confused. 45. I am reading Night and what caught my attention for this book is that you are able to read from a person's point of view being in Auschwitz. This book started out slow and didn't really start out fast. They were warned many times that people were coming, but they chose not to leave. When they were taking to Auschwitz, the book started to pick up more but didn't give a lot of detail. My first impression with this book that it was going to be very detailed and he wasn't going to hold anything. 48. I am reading thousand Splendid suns. I chose this because it sounded really interesting and what it is about is a really big topic and its hard to understand. 1. I think him only coming on Tuesday isn't really fair to her because he usually cancels on her, so if he saw her more than once a week she wouldn't be as upset. He only lives like two miles away so it doesn't make sense that he can't see her as often. I also don't understand why he is so quick to give her away.

  49. My book is A Thousand Splendid Suns. It starts out with Mariam, a girl growing up in Afghanistan, and her story. Her mother is verbally abusive to her because she is a bastard child. She lives with her mother in a small cottage about two miles out of town. Her father comes to visit every Thursday but is almost always late. He brings her gifts and stories from the town, but her mother insists that they are made up tales and empty gestures. This book throws a lot at you all at once. Her mother commits suicide which leads her to an arranged marriage to a man thirty years older than her. I like this book because it gives me an inside perspective into what life is like in the middle east.

Not long after they arrive people from their home town are arriving saying the war has come and the book gets very graphic. Parents came through carrying their dead children and people that have been shot. The rebels attacked the town they were in after a couple of days but they made it out.
