Blog Post #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

Comments

  1. I am reading A long way gone and the main is Ishmael what he has already had to go through at the age of 12 is unbelievable. He handle adversity so good and is going through a civil war. He is not just going through it he is now fighting in the war at age 12 and hasn't seen his family in forever does not know if they are okay or even alive. He has been captured like 5 times and has never really showed how scare he was. If I was him I can't imagine was he is going through and don't know if I would be mentally strong enough to go through what he is. I do not think I could handle a AK47 at the age of 12, probably couldn't handle it at the age of 18. Ishmael has traveled through many villages and has lost people and has seen people die and has gone through so much in his young life and I just hope he finds his family soon.

    1. That sounds like by book, the main character is so young and goes through so much. The holocaust was not an easy thing to go through. He has seen many people die right next to him. The end of my book is coming up and I hope he finds his family, but I only have 15 pages left and he is still in the camp, so I am getting very worried.

    2. I agree with what you said about handling a AK47 at his age and I also think I wouldn't be able to do it at 18. It would be really hard for me to even think about becoming a soldier at his age. Ishmael has gone through so much but he handles it well.

    3. I would have to agree with you 100%. Ishmael handles adversity extremely well. Like when he was captured over and over again he remained calm. I would have to agree with not being mentally tough. The stuff you go through to remain calm through all the difficult situations he is in.

    4. I agree with you that Ishmael handles adversity well. When he remains calm and can talk his way out of being captured or killed, I have a lot of respect for that. I am amazed how well a 12 year old can remain calm in the situations he has been in. There is no way I could've handled the adversity Ishmael has faced. I hope Ishmael finds his family soon to, he deserves to have the comfort of his family with what he has experienced.

    5. I am reading The kite runner, I can connect with your book, however my book has internal problems more than your physical. He has a secret that he has kept since he was young, and it has been eating away at him for a while now, I cant imagine holding it all in as long as he has, I wouldnt be able to do it. I feel as though I would crack way sooner.

    6. I agree that Ismael has gone through so much and he is only 12. I can't imagine going through what he is doing at 12 years old, but he handles it very well.

    7. That is a great point he handles everything very well and for only being 12 most kids wouldnt know what is even happining

    8. For being only 12 years old his story is amazing in the way he explains how he has to survive and fight

    9. I also agree that it would be very tough for such a young kid to go through so much.

  2. In my Novel, Knight, the main character goes through so much. The book is about a Jewish boy who lives through the holocaust. He see babies getting tossed into the fire, people being killed by his side, he gets beat with a whip, he doesn't get enough food, had to walk through the snow after he had surgery on his foot, see his father get beat, his name is now the number on his arm, he feels and acts different then he was in the beginning of the book. In the beginning of the book he had a normal life and for the most part and was happy. He would cry when he prayed, studies with Moshie, now everything is different. He gets through it by living for his father. If his father dies he wont have any reason to keep struggling through life. He keeps pushing through even though he has been on the brink of death many times. I don't know what I would do if I was ripped from my family and thrown into a work camp. You don't know where your family is or if they are alive or not. To me family is the most important things, going through life without family would be very dull. The main character has fought hard and is very brave for being so long.

    2. This book sounds very graphic. I can't believe a child has gone through all of that. I think many people only kept living to help keep their family alive.

    3. I would have to agree with Taylor and say that the book seems graphic which is kind of like the book i am reading, A Long Way Gone.

    4. This boy sounds similar to my main character. Both of our main characters have to face difficult times and have to see many difficult things for being so young.

  3. In A Thousand Splendid Suns Marriam faces many challenges, from her mother telling her what she should think about her father, her stepmothers plotting against her, and her abusive husband. If i were Marriam I would have tried to put my foot down to prevent some of these things but during the time in this book women were not aloud to speak out like that so i think she did the best option by just accepting her fate and trying to make the best of it.

    1. If I were put in the position I would have put my foot down and left, but your right, back then, that didn't happen. But I don't think I would have kept my mouth shut and obeyed. I would have probably want to try, then to be upset through out life. Why live your life if you are going to be unhappy? I believe that you can change your fate if you try, even if it means I would have ended up dead, I think I still would have stand up to them.

    2. i agree that she could have put her foot down but no one would've listened to her because she already has no power or say in anything and she probably would have gotten beat so i think she did the best she could to do what it takes to protect herself.

    3. In my book I Am Malala it is the same thing with Women. In order for women to go outside they must have a guy by them it does not matter the age 5 or 50. Women also have to have a guy with them in order to open a bank account. Same of rules they had back then where sad.

    4. unfortantly most of the women in that country see thing like you are seeing them now. they think the best option is just to stay under the radar. they say covered and let the men rule the country, however that way nothing gets changed. the cylce just continues.

  4. Mariam is facing challenges by her husband Rasheed, he beats her and generally just mistreats her. Laila's family has recently been killed by the war through out the country. Now laila has agreed to marry Rasheed as a second wife, devastating Mariam that he would do such a thing. They are both being meek and just accepting right now. i would not be, i would try to flee the country, flee Rasheed, and try to start a new life.

    1. I disagree i believe that if they were to flee they would probably end up in a similar situation they are in now or maybe worse.

    2. I feel like it is very hard to picture yourself in that situation. Mariam probably feels very helpless and most of my characters feel the same as well in my book Night. In the end they all accepted what was happening and kept going just like your characters.

    3. i agree with you as well if they were to leave the country they would have alot better life style then they have with rasheed in that unthinkable situations that she faces

  5. In my book Ishmael is going through all these villages with this group of people he doesn't really know that well. Before he met this group of boys he was all alone. When he was by himself he felt very lonely not having any human contact for days. He doesn't know where any of his family is and he is struggling with that. While he is traveling with the group of boys he goes to a village where they said some of his family was, but when he gets to the village his finds his family dead. Ishmael got his hopes up to see his family for nothing. Ishmael handles being all alone very well, he wishes he was with his family but there really isn't anything he can do about it. If I was Ishmael I was not be able to do what he is going through especially at such a young age. I would just want to die.

    1. Ishmael is an very calm person. Wondering if your family is still alive or not would drive me crazy. I would have to agree with you that it would be very difficult to go through such events at that age. Being alone would be extremely though so it's a good thing that he found a group of boys to travel with. I think it's helping keep the boys alive faving each other.

  6. I am reading A long way gone and my main character faces a lot of struggles, one being his village being destroyed by the rebels and getting separated from his family. Another struggle he faces is he repeatedly gets captured by village people and the rebels, but he finds ways to escape. I think he handles the struggles by keeping his main focus on finding his family and his family is what keeps him going. I think that no one should ever have to go through what he goes through and I definitely feel like no one would even know how to handle this situation.

    1. I always forget about his family in this book but i agree with you because this is his only motivation he has to keep going because he has that little hope that he will see them again but with out the motivation of his family i feel like he would have gave up and accepted death a long time ago.

    2. I think that this book is very similar to my main character Elie. His home, religion, family, and faith in his god get taken away from him as well. Elie focused on his father, and living for him in order to stay motivated to stay alive.

    3. I like what you said about his main focus being on his family. I never really though about that. Everywhere he goes, he is trying to find his family.

    4. My book also focuses a lot on family, but it sounds like your book is more focused on the characters life and in my book it focuses on a lot on what is going on around them. There are a lot of parts in my book that focuses on family though and how things are for them. Your books sounds very interesting!

  7. The book I am reading is The Kite Runner. Amir the main character goes threw a lot of hardships and struggles. One is he had to go through the loss of Hassan and feeling the struggle with Hassan being raped. I don't really know how i would react to it, it would have put me into shock as well. Another is when Amir returns to Afghanistan and learns about Hassan and looks forward to looking for him. He soon after finds out that Hassan is dead and feels guilt He doesn't know how to react and remember everything that has happen. If this was me I don't think I could think straight because it would bother me and I would feel bad for never getting to talk to him again. I hope that Amir can move past all this and fight through all his struggles.

    3. I am reading I am Malala and it deals with women too. The women can't go to school to get an education and they have to stay home all the time. The women definitely don't get the same rights as men. I know how it feels to be bossed around all the time by a boy and it definitely is not fun. Our books have some similarities.

    4. In my book women are treated poorly just like they are in yours, but not to the same extent. Sadly men have had their control over wives and treated them like nobody would want to be treated, making our books both alike in a sense. Too bad some cultures have some cruelty and limited opportunities for women.

  10. I am reading a long way gone and the main character is Ishmeal. Ishmeal is only twelve years old and has experienced many things that most parents wouldn't even think there twelve year old could experience including war. He doesn't only experience it but he fights in it. Now think about that at twelve years old he has his own Ak-47, not only experiencing war but fighting in it, he has no family and had been alone for months and has to kill people. If I was in this situation I know I would've been dead along time ago either from giving up from losing my family and friends or from lack of food and constant traveling and not knowing where I was going and what to do or eat. I also don't think I could take a life and at the moment that I would have hesitated to take someones life it would be to late for me.

  11. In my book, Ishmael has to find a safe place while avoiding the rebels by hiding from them. He also has to deal with the trauma of seeing the corpses of the victims of the rebels revolt by trying to not think at all. By the time Ishmael got to Yele, he had to join the military because they did not have enough soldiers to fight of the rebels. He deals with this with drugs given to him by the military. If I was Ishmael, I would have given up a long time ago because I do not have the mental strength to continue on with what Ishmael saw. I am not a fighter as I am unfit to fight anyone.

  12. In the book night, i feel as if no one should have to go through what they did. He litterly watches his father get beaten, and doesn't even blink. The Germans broke them down to the point where nothing phases them anymore. Elie and the rest of the prisoners had to walk by multiple people that were hung and stare them in the eyes, some of which wee still alive because they were too light. I do not know what i would do if i was in Elie's shoes. i would want to do something to stop it or even run, but i would be to afraid of being shot.

  13. In the novel Night a young Jewish boy lives though the holocaust. He goes though countless selections, torment, and hunger. He as well is experiencing his own fight with his faith, and whether or not his god is even worth having faith for. If I was Elie I would struggle to stay faithful, although it is very hard to put myself in his position, I do not think I could handle the torture the way he did. He used his father for strength, and kept himself alive, so he would have a reason to live too. The portions of food he'd give his father represented his true strength. I do not think I would be able to sacrifice my food because of all the pain. I think Elie is a very strong person, he has gone through the absolute worst of the worst and his strength was inspiring. He at times did lose faith with his god, but anyone going though that would question if there even was such a thing, I know I would. He did not go though his troubles alone, and he did have a lot of people in the camp living one man for himself, and that truly opened his eyes in order for him and his father to live long enough untill the camp was liberated.

The challenges are so hard to think of and how he made it through his life. He is a 12 year old running away from war and living him in the jungle by himself. For a 12 year old he handles all these challenges really well. He has accepted that death happens in everyday life and for a 12 year old too see all these deaths and gruesome things is hard to think. He also has to become a soldier in order to survive. I couldn't imagine seeing all these things at this age and would probably almost just give up. He lost his family and traveled with his brother and friends, but later gets separated from his brother and friends. He spends a month or two trapped in a jungle by himself. He then finds people he knew to travel with. After traveling for a long time and right outside f a village his whole family lives in when it is attacked, captured by the nations military and trained to fight for the army. The one thing keeping him going though all of this is to find his family. IF I were Ishmael, I don't think I would have been able to do what he had done, from surviving the jungle and being captured by rebels multiple time sand almost dying many of them. Ishmael has to deal with these rebels attacking wherever he goes and has a very hard time dealing with it emotionally. I think that the challenges Ishmael face are horrible, and no one should ever have to go through the horrors he had to face. 20. In my novel, A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah, the author and protagonist, goes through hardship after hardship in my novel. Ishmael not only doesn't know where his family is, in the middle of a war-zone mind you, but he also sees dead body after dead body in abandoned villages that were attacked by Rebels, spends an entire month by himself in the forest, almost gets executed by not only a group of Rebels, but by villagers who fear anyone they don't know, and becomes a child soldier. Not only does he have to kill Rebels, but he also watches his friends die right in front of him. The only reason he doesn't feel terrified, is because of all the drugs the military forces him to take. When he's taken away from that environment and forces to go to school and live with other child soldiers. Not only is he dealing with drug withdrawal, but he starts dealing with PTSD from the actions that he did when he fought. Keep in mind, he had to deal with all this when he was 12 to when he was about 16 years old. I view Beah's story as a never ending nightmare, he may have been taken away from the war, but the war is still with him. I'm not gonna lie, if i was in Beah's situation, I probably would have died. I would try to survive in the woods with a small group of people as best as I could, but I'm not quite sure I would be able to survive the way he did.

  21. I am reading the book A Long Way Gone. The main character Ishmael faces a lot of adversity. His village was attacked by rebels and they took over. When they took over he ran away with a group of friends. The next problem is when he was captured by the rebels. He was nervous but he stayed calm through it and ended up escaping from them. In this case I don't think i would've stayed calm at all. If i was captured i don't think i would've tried to escape because i would be scared to get shot. Throughout the book Ishmael gets in difficult situations. I wouldn't be able to stay calm as good as he does. I give Ishmael a bunch of respect for how well he can control himself.

I would also be afraid to escape because If I got caught again the rebels would probably punish me worst than they did before. Ishmael is tough for only being 12 and having these terrible experiences. I also give Ishmael a ton of respect for the way he handles himself and is able to live to tell his story.

  22. I am reading Night. The main character Elie is faced by some adversity. Some challenges that Elie is faced in Night would be when he and his father have to go to the Auschwitz concentration camp causing Elie and his father be separated from their family. Elie so far remains calm and collected while his father gets beaten for not working fast enough. If I was in their shoes and that stuff have happened to me, I would react the total opposite. I would react scared getting my gold teeth extracted by some crooked dentist person. I would also be scared to get beaten for not working hard enough which is not right. Elie and his father deserve a lot of respect for acting the way they do just to survive.

  24. I am reading A long way gone and the main character is Ishmael. Ishmael faces a variety of adversity. His village gets attacked by rebels and he has to go on the run so he doesn't get captured or killed by the rebels. while on the run with a group of his friends, they pass through a lot of villages, some of the villages are not as welcoming as others. Some villagers capture the group and tie them up and almost killed them. Ishmael handled the situations he was in by getting nervous and quietly and didn't really say anything while he was in these situations. In another situation when he ends up fighting in the war he shows no remorse for the people he's killing. If I was in Ishmael's shoes I don't know how I would handle the adversity he faced because experiencing the horrific events Ishmael faced at such a young age affects people differently.

  25. I am reading "I am Malala" and so far throughout the book Malala and her family has been through a lot, but usually gets through everything over time. Her family and herself had to move so many times and they have had to move because of the Taliban at one point. Even though where she lives religion is key and school is not very important and girls are shamed if they go to school, but Malala loves school and she finds every way to go to school. I believe that Malala is such a brave girl because she risks everything to still go to school and do speeches/interviews. If I were in her position I don't think that I would be able to half of the things that she did, I would be way to scared.

    1. I agree that if I was in Malala shoes I would be so scared and just give up and not do all the stuff she is doing. An example of Malala not giving up is this quote I found "They can not stop me. I will get my education if its at home school, or somewhere else"(161). Malala believes education is very important and her dad supports her very well.

  27. Ishmael is the main character in a long way gone He faces a bunch of adversity all at the same time. He goes days with out food or sleep and walks for miles at a time only stopping by the streams for water. Another problem he has to over come is not getting caught by the rebels. The rebels adjective is to loot and kill, local villages and recruit other soldiers. The problem is the rebels are every where and it is sometimes hard to get around from village to village. If i was in his shoes i would not be able to do it. In order to be able to run from the rebels i would need to have a full stomach and good nights rest.If i do not get that i would be completely worthless and have no energy to keep going. Ishmael has no other option its life or death for him

There are more then 50,000 girls with know education because of the Taliban and one of those girls is Malala. Malala is handling it just fine by not going to school but she will do anything in her power to get her education back like writing journals and begin on TV. She speaks out for what she believes is right and her dad supports her through it all. If I where Malala I would just stay at home and work around the house until girls can go back to school. I would not do everything Malala is doing I would be way to scared to.

  31. In the book The kite runner Amir struggles with guilt. He did something he is not proud of when he was young, and he keeps revolving around it. And of course he did like any other kid did, he hid from the problem and he pushed it aside. Now he is an adult and has a wife, and even though its been plenty of years, he still has not put the past aside. He had a dream that he killed his friend, when he found out that he was killed. Even though he did not kill his friend, He still feels responsible to his death, and by what he put him through. If I were in his shoes, I feel I would do the same, As a kid we do not like fessing up to our parents when we do something wrong. All throughout this book Ishmael is questioning what is next for him. As he is wondering from town to town he doesn't know if the town that he is approaching is over run by the rebels, burnt to the ground, or if he will be shunned by all the villagers. Personally that would just drive me to insanity. I like to know what is going on at all times.

They tried six more times and failed every time. Rasheed became mad at frustrated with Mariam. She tried her best to please him and make thee house clean and cook his favorite meals, but, nothing worked. Later in the book the daughter of couple down the street from Mariam and Rasheed, Laila, almost got killed. Her house was struck by a rocket and Rasheed found her and brought her to his house. He and Maria nursed her back to health and Rasheed decided that he wanted to marry her. Laila was i think only 13 at the time and Mariam was very upset. Not long later Laila was pregnant and Mariam felt replaced. Rasheed now only thought of her as a maid. If I was Mariam, I don’t know what I would do.

Hes raped her, yelled at her, and forced her to have a baby. I view all of her challenges as absolutely horrible. I cannot believe that's how they are in their country. She wants to flee and get away from Rasheed, but it's also very tough for her to leave because he is so rough. I would try to do the same and flee from him. 41. I am reading Night, which is about a young Jewish boy in the holocaust. During his time in there he witnesses and experiences countless things. He sees babies thrown into fires, people by his side being killed, him going through countless selections, being whipped/ tortured, having to starve every day and fight through the hunger to see another day. Through this, he has trouble believing in his faith. He doesn't know if he should believe in god his god or even have faith in him for that matter. If I was in Elie shoes, I would struggle with my faith also. I wouldn't of been able to handle the torture and endless days of work and lack of food. He had many times of doubt and wanted to just give up, but he didn't because of his dad. His dad was his strength, he looked to his dad to keep fighting. When his dad was getting weaker, he would give up parts of his portion of food so his dad was able to get stronger. Through this, he showed strength by sacrificing his own food for his dad. I wouldn't be able to do that because I would want to mask the pain of starving some way. Through this book, he lost his faith at times, but he has also found his faith in different ways. He questioned himself and his faith everyday on why he was in there and no one else. Towards the end, he fought harder because he started to have hope it would end sooner.

  42. In my book, A Thousand Splendid Suns, the main characters Mariam and Laila face all sorts of challenges. Laila gave Rasheed a child, but it was a girl so of course it wasn't good enough for him. Laila has this plan to run away with her baby, which she confides in Mariam about. Mariam, having to endure Rasheed's abuse for twenty years, is fully on board. She's formed a close relationship with Aziza, and she insists on coming with. They leave one day after Rasheed has left for work and make their way to the bus station. They meet a man there, telling him that Laila is a widow travelling with her daughter and mother to Pakistan, asking him to say they are cousins. The man agrees, and when they get to the Taliban man in front of the bus door, he whispers something in his ear. The guard tells Mariam and Laila he knows they're lying and takes them into an interrogation room. They eventually are returned home, where Rasheed is angrily waiting. He throws Laila and Aziza into a room, boards the window and blocks the sunlight coming from underneath the door. They go several days without food and water, Aziza becoming very weak causing Laila to fear losing her daughter. Flash forward a few years and Rasheed finally gets his son. Laila's delivery is anything but smooth. With no anesthetic, she's forced to be awake during her C-section. A few years later a fire causes Rasheed to lose his shop, leaving them scrounging to make ends meet. With not enough food, they are forced to send Aziza to an orphanage.

At one point Laila does fight back, and he puts his gun in her mouth, so if he would do that to his "beloved" wife, I don't think he would hesitate killing Mariam on the spot

Malala and her father have a tight father daughter bond which helps both of them get through this rough patch in their lives, while supporting each other.
